The Ontario Cup
The
Ontario Cup competition began in 1901 when the Ontario Football
Association League was formed. Initially there were three
competitions, one for senior teams, another for juniors and still
another for juveniles. The winners of the senior competition were
presented with the old Caledonia Cup, presented by the Galt
Caledonian Society and originally awarded to the winners of the
annual all-star competition between the Western and Central
Associations and then between the Western Association and the
Toronto League. The winners of the juvenile competition were
presented with the Crawford Cup, donated by Henry Crawford, the
first president of the Ontario Football Association League. Walter
Thomson, second president of the OSFA, donated the Thomson Cup,
presented to the junior champions. Unfortunately, the Crawford and
Thomson Cup competitions don't seem to have lasted for too long.
In
more recent years, competitions have proliferated, and competitions
now take place at all age levels and for both male and female
players.
